Drag a photo or an image into the box, paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V, or take a picture with your phone.

  2. Check the languages

The language of the text is detected automatically, or you can choose it yourself. By default, the translation is into the language of this page.

Copy the translation, download it as a .txt file, or download the image with the translated text in place of the original.

Image translation that's simple and easy to check

Automatic text reading

The text in the image is recognized in your browser (OCR), including Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Arabic and Hindi.

Editable recognized text

If a word was misread, fix it in the "Recognized text" box, then click "Translate again".

Translated image

When possible, each block of text is covered with its translation on the background color: download the result as a PNG.

On PC and on mobile

A screenshot pasted on a computer, a photo taken with your phone: no app to install.

Translate the text in an image on a PC or Mac

On a computer, the quickest way is to take a screenshot. On Windows, press Windows + Shift + S and select the area with the text; on a Mac, use Cmd + Shift + Ctrl + 4. The screenshot is copied to your clipboard: come back to this page and paste it with Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on a Mac). You can also drag a PNG, JPG, WebP, BMP or GIF file from your Downloads folder. The text is read and translated in a few seconds, with no software to install. It's handy for translating an image to English from a foreign website, an infographic in Spanish, an error message in another language or a photo of a document someone emailed you.

Translate a photo with your phone: menus, signs, labels

On a phone, the "Take a photo" button opens the camera directly. Snap a restaurant menu while traveling, a street sign, an instruction manual or a product label, and the translation appears under the image. For a good result, shoot the text straight on, without glare, and close enough for the letters to be sharp: the clearer the text in the photo, the more reliable the reading. For a menu, take one page at a time. Prices, quantities and names are kept as they are, and line breaks are respected: each dish stays on its own line, next to its price.

Screenshot translation: which languages?

The tool reads text in English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Turkish, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Hindi and Arabic. In "Automatic" mode, the script is recognized first (Latin, Cyrillic, Chinese characters, Japanese, Korean, Arabic or Devanagari), then the text is read with the right language; if the detection hesitates, choose the language yourself. The translation can go into any of these same 15 languages, for example to translate a Japanese image to English, a Chinese screenshot to English or a photo in Arabic. On first use, the reading data for the language is downloaded once, then cached by your browser.

Get the translated image, and improve the result

Besides the text, the tool can produce a translated image: each block of text is covered with a rectangle in the background color, and the translation is written inside it. Use the "Original image" and "Translated image" buttons to compare, then download the PNG. The look is simple: the original font isn't reproduced, and on a very busy photo the rectangles are more visible. If the reading isn't perfect, fix the recognized text, then translate again; as long as you only change words, without adding or removing paragraphs, the translated image is recalculated. To just pull the text out of an image without translating it, use the "Image to Text (OCR)" tool instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I translate an image for free?

Drop the image on this page, paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V or take a photo. The text is read and translated automatically, with no sign-up and no software to install.

How do I translate an image to English?

Leave "Translate to" set to English (it's the default on the English version of the site) and add the image. The original language is detected automatically.

How do I translate the text in a screenshot on a PC?

Take the screenshot with Windows + Shift + S (or Cmd + Shift + Ctrl + 4 on a Mac), then paste it on this page with Ctrl+V. The translation appears under the image.

Can I translate a restaurant menu from a photo?

Yes. On your phone, tap "Take a photo" and shoot one page of the menu, straight on and without glare. Each dish keeps its line and its price in the translation.

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No: the image stays on your device and the text is read in your browser. Only the recognized text is sent to our server to be translated, and it isn't kept.

Why does the translation have mistakes?

Most of the time, a word was misread in the image: a blurry photo, handwriting, a very decorative font or the wrong language selected. Fix the recognized text, then click "Translate again".
