White, pink or brown noise: what's the difference?

All three are steady noises, but their energy is spread differently across frequencies. White noise contains every frequency at the same intensity: it sounds like a high-pitched hiss, close to a badly tuned radio, and is great at masking background noise. Pink noise gives less room to high frequencies: it's softer, like steady rain, and many people find it nicer for sleeping. Brown noise boosts the low end even more: it sounds like a deep rumble, a distant waterfall or the inside of a plane. To focus in an open-plan office, white or pink noise works well; for sleep, people often prefer pink or brown. Some people bothered by tinnitus also find that a soft noise makes it less noticeable, although it isn't a treatment.

White noise for babies: the right settings

White noise, a heartbeat or shushing remind some babies of the sounds they heard in the womb and can help cover household noise. A few precautions matter more than which sound you choose. Keep the volume moderate: the benchmark often quoted is no more than 50 dB near the baby, about the level of a quiet conversation. Put the phone or speaker away from the crib, at least 2 meters (about 6.5 feet), never in the crib or right next to their ear. To check the actual level, measure it where the baby lies with the "Decibel Meter" tool. Finally, set the timer rather than leaving the sound on all night if you don't need to.

Sleep timer, sound mixer and locked screen

All the sounds are generated live by your browser: there's no file to download. You can layer several sounds, for example rain with a faint brown noise, or waves with a fan, and set the volume of each. The sleep timer stops everything after 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours or 8 hours, gradually lowering the volume to avoid a sudden silence that could wake someone up. You can also choose non-stop playback. On most phones, the sound keeps playing with the screen locked, which saves battery and keeps the bedroom dark.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is white noise safe for babies?

The main points are volume and distance: keep it moderate (a commonly quoted benchmark is 50 dB max near the baby) and place the device at least 2 meters (about 6.5 feet) from the crib. If you have questions about your child's sleep, talk to your pediatrician.

What's the difference between white noise and pink noise?

White noise has the same intensity at every frequency and sounds higher-pitched. Pink noise tones down the high frequencies, which makes it softer and closer to the sound of rain.

Can I leave white noise on all night?

Yes, the "No timer" option lets you do that, at a moderate volume. You can also choose an 8-hour timer, which lowers the sound gradually before stopping it.

Does the sound keep playing when the screen is off?

On most phones, yes: the sound keeps playing with the screen locked. If yours cuts it off, keep the page open in the foreground.

Is this online white noise free?

Yes, it's free with no sign-up. The sounds are generated in your browser, with nothing to download.
