Your voice, your text — Nothing is sent to Chatzam. Speech recognition is your browser's own: Chrome and Edge send the sound to Google's or Microsoft's services to turn it into text. The text stays on your device, saved in this browser.

How do you type with your voice?

  1. Pick the language and start dictating

Check the dictation language (US, UK, Australian, Canadian or Indian English…), then click "Start dictation" and allow the microphone.

  2. Speak naturally

The text being recognized appears in gray, then is added to the text box. Say "comma", "period", "question mark" or "new line" to punctuate.

  3. Edit and grab your text

Fix the text with the keyboard, click somewhere else to dictate from there, then copy it or download it as a .txt file.

Type with your voice on PC, Mac or phone

Voice typing, also called dictation, speech recognition or speech to text, turns what you say into written text. It saves a lot of time: people speak about three times faster than they type. It also helps people who find writing hard because of dyslexia, wrist pain or a disability, and anyone who prefers to put their ideas into words out loud. This page works on a Windows PC, a Mac, a Chromebook or an Android phone with nothing to install: open it in Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge, click the mic and talk. On iPhone and iPad, Safari supports it too on recent versions. The text appears while you speak, and you can fix it with the keyboard at any time.

Voice commands for punctuation

Speech recognition doesn't always add punctuation by itself, so just say it. In English, say "comma", "period" (or "full stop"), "question mark", "exclamation point" (or "exclamation mark"), "colon", "semicolon" and "ellipsis" (or "dot dot dot"). For layout, say "new line" and "new paragraph"; for quotes, "open quote" and "close quote", and the same for parentheses ("open parenthesis", "close parenthesis"). The tool attaches the punctuation to the previous word and capitalizes the start of each sentence. The commands also exist in Spanish ("coma", "punto y aparte", "abrir interrogación"), French ("virgule", "à la ligne"), Italian, German and Portuguese. If you need to type the word "period" itself, uncheck the commands for that sentence.

Dictating well: mic, language and browser

For good recognition, speak in a normal voice, 8 to 12 inches (20 to 30 cm) from the mic, in a quiet room; a headset or earbuds with a mic often work better than a laptop's built-in mic. Choose the right language variant: British, Australian or Indian English, or Mexican Spanish, are recognized more accurately with their own setting. Voice typing uses your browser's speech recognition engine: Chrome and Edge do it very well, but Firefox doesn't offer this feature, and some browsers like Brave or Opera show it without it actually working. If your browser doesn't work, or to turn an existing recording into text (a voice memo, a meeting, a lecture), use "Transcribe Audio to Text", which works in all recent browsers.

What happens to my voice and my text?

Chatzam receives neither your voice nor your text. Recognition is done by your browser: Google Chrome sends the sound to Google's speech recognition servers, Microsoft Edge to Microsoft's, and Safari uses Apple's dictation, partly on the device. It's the same service as the dictation on your phone or in Google Docs. The text, however, stays on your device: it's saved in this browser's storage so you don't lose it if you close the page, until you click "Clear". For fuller note-taking with several notes, copy the text into the "Online Notepad".

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use voice typing on a PC?

Open this page in Chrome or Edge, choose the language, click "Start dictation" and allow the microphone. Talk: the text types itself. All that's left is to copy or download it.

How do I add punctuation when voice typing?

Say the mark: "comma", "period", "question mark", "exclamation point", "colon", and "new line" to start a new line. Capital letters at the start of sentences are added automatically.

Why isn't voice typing working?

Check that the mic is allowed (icon in the address bar) and that you're using Chrome or Edge: Firefox doesn't offer speech recognition, and Brave or Opera often block it. An internet connection is also required.

Does voice typing work on iPhone and Android?

Yes, in Chrome on Android and in Safari on recent iPhones and iPads. Your phone's keyboard also has a mic key, but this page lets you dictate long texts and find them again later.

Is my text saved?

Yes, in this browser, on this device: it's still there when you come back to the page, as long as you don't click "Clear" or wipe your browser data.

Can I dictate in a language other than English?

Yes: choose from more than 30 languages and variants, such as Spanish from Spain or Mexico, French, Brazilian Portuguese, Arabic, Chinese, Hindi or Japanese.
