Which voice effect should you choose?
Each effect imitates a familiar sound. "Helium" makes your voice high-pitched, like after breathing in the gas from a balloon; "Monster" makes it deep and menacing. "Robot" gives a metallic, synthetic voice, and "Alien" adds a vibrato that makes the voice wobble. "Echo" repeats your words, while "Cave" drowns them in the reverb of a huge space. "Phone" and "Radio" imitate the sound of a phone handset or an old radio. Finally, "Reverse" plays the recording backwards: fun for inventing a secret language or trying to repeat a reversed sentence. Try them all on the same recording, you'll hear each one instantly.
Understanding pitch in semitones
Pitch is set in semitones, the smallest step of the musical scale: 12 semitones make an octave. Going up 12 semitones doubles the frequency of your voice, and going down 12 halves it: a deep voice at 120 Hz goes to 240 Hz at +12 and to 60 Hz at −12. Each semitone multiplies the frequency by about 1.059. In practice, +3 to +5 brightens the voice, +7 to +12 gives a cartoon voice, −3 to −5 makes it deeper and −8 to −12 turns it into a giant's voice. Unlike a record spinning too fast, your speaking speed doesn't change: only the pitch moves. At extreme settings, the tone becomes more artificial, which is normal.

For a good result, record in a quiet room, about 8 inches (20 cm) from the mic, without shouting: the effects also amplify background noise and distortion.
