6 positions, 5 styles
Top or bottom, left, center or right, in the format “1”, “Page 1”, “1 / 10”, “Page 1 of 10” or “- 1 -”.
Cover page and starting number
Leave the cover without a number and start numbering from the number of your choice.
Preview before downloading
The preview of the first page shows the result: adjust the text size and margin before you confirm.
Original quality kept
Only the numbers are added: the text, images and layout of the PDF stay exactly the same.
Which page number style to choose?
The “1” style is the most discreet and suits most documents. “Page 1” is more explicit, for example for a printed report. “1 / 10” and “Page 1 of 10” also show the total number of pages: that's useful for a contract, an application packet or a document sent by mail, because the recipient can see right away if a page is missing. “- 1 -” gives a more traditional look, similar to a book. As for position, bottom center is the most common; at the bottom right, the number stays easy to spot when flipping through a printed document.
Cover page and starting number: the right settings
A thesis, a report or an application often starts with a title page that shouldn't be numbered: check “Don't number the first page”. The starting number is useful when your PDF continues another document: if your appendices come after a 24-page report, start at 25. Check the result in the preview and, if the number you get isn't what you expected, simply adjust the starting number. Always add page numbers last: if you add, delete or move pages afterwards, the numbering will no longer be right.
Number PDF pages without Word or Acrobat
When you no longer have the original Word file, or for a PDF you received or scanned, you can't edit the footer. This tool adds the numbers directly onto each page, on top of the existing content, without touching the rest of the document. If the PDF already has a footer, increase the margin or place the numbers at the top so they don't overlap. To combine several files before numbering them, use “Merge PDF”; to change the page order, “Organize PDF”; to remove an unneeded page, “Delete PDF Pages”.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I add page numbers to a PDF for free?
Import the PDF, choose the position and style of the numbers, then download the file. Every page is numbered in one go, for free and with no sign-up.
How do I skip the cover page?
Check the “Don't number the first page” option. The cover stays blank and the numbers appear on the following pages.
Can I start numbering from a number other than 1?
Yes, enter the starting number of your choice. That's handy for appendices or a chapter that follows on from another document.
Can I show “Page 1 of 10”?
Yes, it's one of the five styles available, along with “1”, “Page 1”, “1 / 10” and “- 1 -”. The total number of pages is calculated automatically.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. The numbering is done in your browser: the document never leaves your device, and its original quality is preserved.
