How to convert a time to another time zone?

  1. Set the starting time

Pick the date and time to convert. The starting time zone is your device's, and you can choose another one.

  2. Add cities

Search for a city or a time zone in the list and add as many as you need: New York, London, Tokyo, Sydney…

  3. Read the times

Each city shows its time, the difference in hours and, when needed, a note that it's the previous or next day.

The exact time difference, on the date you choose

Automatic daylight saving time

Each country's clock changes are applied for the date you choose, using the time zone data built into your browser.

Previous and next day flagged

When it's 8 p.m. in New York in winter, it's 10 a.m. the next day in Tokyo: the change of day is clearly shown.

Saved cities

The cities you add are kept in your browser, so they're still there on your next visit, no account needed.

Live current time

The current time is shown and updates continuously, so you can tell at a glance whether it's a good time to call.

How to calculate a time difference

Every time zone is defined by its offset from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). New York is on UTC−5 in winter (EST) and UTC−4 in summer (EDT); Los Angeles is 3 hours behind, on UTC−8 or UTC−7. London is on UTC+0 in winter and UTC+1 in summer. The time difference is the gap between the two offsets: New York is 5 hours behind London most of the year, so 3 p.m. in New York is 8 p.m. in London and noon in Los Angeles. Tokyo, on UTC+9 all year round, is 14 hours ahead of New York in winter and 13 hours in summer. Watch out for the change of day: a call at 8 p.m. in New York in January lands at 10 a.m. the next day in Tokyo.

Daylight saving time: why the gap changes during the year

Not every country changes its clocks, and those that do don't all switch on the same date. The United States and Canada spring forward on the second Sunday in March and fall back on the first Sunday in November. The UK and the European Union move to summer time on the last Sunday in March and back on the last Sunday in October. As a result, in 2026, from March 8 to March 29 and from October 25 to November 1, New York is only 4 hours behind London. Japan never changes its clocks, and neither do Hawaii or most of Arizona: Phoenix shares Denver's time in winter but Los Angeles' time in summer. The converter applies these rules automatically for the date you enter.

Scheduling an international meeting or call

To set up a meeting with people in several countries, enter the actual date of the meeting rather than today's: a few weeks can make a one-hour difference because of daylight saving time. Add every city involved to see everyone's local time at a glance and find a slot that works for all. Between the US East Coast and the UK, morning in New York is afternoon in London, and a 9 a.m. meeting in San Francisco is already 5 p.m. there. Remember too that in the Southern Hemisphere, in Australia for example, daylight saving time runs during the northern winter. Time zones are named after a major reference city: pick the one that shares the time of the person you're calling.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the time difference between New York and London?

London is 5 hours ahead of New York most of the year: 3 p.m. in New York is 8 p.m. in London. For a few weeks, between the US and European clock changes in March and again in October–November, the gap is only 4 hours.

What time is it in Los Angeles when it's noon in New York?

It's 9 a.m. in Los Angeles, which is 3 hours behind New York all year round, since both cities change their clocks on the same dates.

What's the time difference with Japan?

Japan doesn't use daylight saving time: Tokyo is 14 hours ahead of New York in winter and 13 hours ahead in summer. At 3 p.m. in New York, it's 5 a.m. the next day in Tokyo in winter, and 4 a.m. in summer.

Does the converter handle daylight saving time?

Yes. Each time zone's clock-change rules are applied automatically for the date you choose, using your browser's time zone database.

What do UTC−5 and UTC+1 mean?

UTC is Coordinated Universal Time, the world's reference time. UTC−5 means 5 hours behind that reference: it's Eastern Standard Time in New York, which becomes UTC−4 (Eastern Daylight Time) in summer. UTC+1 is one hour ahead, like London in summer.
