To message a contractor, a seller on Facebook Marketplace or a delivery driver just once, there's no need to clutter your contacts. WhatsApp opens a chat with any number through a link like https://wa.me/12015550123. Enter the number here and test the link: the conversation opens in the app or in WhatsApp Web, and you can start typing right away, without adding the contact. The link only works if the number has a WhatsApp account; otherwise, WhatsApp shows an error message. On a computer, WhatsApp Web or the desktop app must be linked to your account. And if it's your own number, the link lets people message you without you having to spell it out.
The right number format: country code, no +, no leading 0
A wa.me link expects the number in international format, digits only: the country code, then the number without its leading 0, with no + sign, spaces, dashes or parentheses. The US number (201) 555-0123 becomes 12015550123, the UK mobile 07700 900123 becomes 447700900123, the Indian mobile 98765 43210 becomes 919876543210 and the Australian mobile 0412 345 678 becomes 61412345678. A link like wa.me/07700900123 leads to an invalid number. In the tool, pick the country and type the number as you'd dial it locally (for the US and Canada, the 10 digits without the 1), or start with + to enter it in international format. The pre-filled message goes after ?text=, with spaces and special characters encoded: https://wa.me/12015550123?text=Hi%20Paul.
