A truly fair random number generator
Many online generators rely on Math.random, which is fast but not designed for security, and squeeze the result into the range with a simple modulo. That shortcut creates a slight bias: some numbers come up a little more often than others. Our tool uses crypto.getRandomValues, the cryptographic generator built into your browser, and throws away any value that would cause that bias before drawing a new one. The result: between 1 and 100, every number has exactly a 1 in 100 chance of coming up, on every draw. Everything runs on your device, nothing is sent to a server, and nobody can influence or predict the outcome. That's what you need for a draw everyone can trust.
With or without repeats: what's the difference?
Without the “No repeats” option, each number is drawn independently of the others, like rolling a die several times: the same number can come up twice or more. That's the right setting to simulate dice rolls or generate test data. With the option checked, a number that has already come up can't come back, like balls that aren't put back in the drum: that's what you need to pick several winners, assign a running order or fill in a lottery ticket. Keep in mind that you then can't draw more numbers than the range contains: between 1 and 49, 49 numbers at most, since the range includes both the minimum and the maximum.
Ideas: giveaways, games and the classroom
For a social media giveaway, number the entrants in the order of their comments, then pick a number between 1 and the number of entrants: you have your winner, and a screenshot of the result serves as proof. In the classroom, pick a student number to call on someone at random, or a full running order with no repeats and sorting turned off.
