Finding your way around a piano keyboard
A piano keyboard repeats the same pattern every octave: 7 white keys and 5 black keys, or 12 notes. The black keys come in groups of 2 and then 3, and that's how you find your way: C is always the white key just to the left of a group of 2 black keys. Starting from that C, the white keys are C, D, E, F, G, A, B, then the next C, one octave higher. The black keys are the sharps and flats: the one between C and D is called C sharp or D flat. There's no black key between E and F, or between B and C.
Piano note names: C D E or Do Re Mi
In English, notes are named with letters, the ones you'll find in chord charts and most tutorials: C, D, E, F, G, A, B. Many other countries, like France, Italy or Spain, use solfège names instead: C = Do, D = Re, E = Mi, F = Fa, G = Sol, A = La, B = Si (or Ti). The online piano shows the letter names on the keys, with the octave number (C4, D4…) if you choose, which helps you follow a video or sheet music. For your first songs, "Learn a song" mode is the easiest: the next key lights up and the melody only moves on when you play the right note, at your own pace. Start with Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star or Frère Jacques, which only use a few notes, then move on to Ode to Joy. On a computer, the keyboard lets you play faster than with the mouse and play two notes at once. The sustain pedal, on the space bar, makes the notes ring on: release it when the harmony changes, or the sounds blur together. If you have a MIDI keyboard, plug it in and open the page in Chrome or Edge to play on real keys.
