The classic meme and the modern meme

Classic Impact style

White capital letters with a black outline, in a free font very close to Impact. Capitals and colors can be changed.

Caption above

The social media format: a white bar with black text above the photo, which stays untouched.

Automatic size

The text shrinks and wraps to fit inside the image, even when it's long. You can also set the size by hand, text by text.

Nothing is uploaded

Your photo stays on your device: everything is drawn in the browser. No account, no watermark.

How do you make a meme with your own photo?

A good meme is a picture that speaks for itself and a short line that gives it a twist: a selfie with a funny face, your cat's expression, a screenshot of a conversation. The best-known format puts the setup at the top and the punchline at the bottom. Add your image by dragging it, choosing it or pasting it with Ctrl + V, then replace the two sample texts. A few tips: few words per line, capital letters, a high-contrast image and a clearly visible face. The text shrinks and wraps to fit, and you can drag it out of the way of a face or add a text box anywhere you like. The exported image measures between 800 and 2,400 pixels on its longest side, a perfect size for WhatsApp, Instagram, X or Discord.

Classic meme or caption above: which style to choose?

The classic style comes from the "image macros" of the 2000s: a bold font in white capitals, outlined in black to stay readable on any background, placed right on the image. The modern style, now the most common on X, Instagram and Reddit, puts the caption in black on a white bar above the photo, written normally like a message: the picture stays whole and the text can be longer. The tool switches from one to the other in one click. When you switch to the modern style, your top and bottom texts become the caption; free texts stay on the image, so you can combine both.

A free font that looks like Impact

The classic meme font, Impact, comes with Windows but not with every phone, which is why some memes look different from one device to another. The generator uses Anton, a bold, narrow font that's very close, released under a free license (SIL Open Font License) and hosted on chatzam: it looks the same everywhere, with accented letters like É, Ç, Ñ or Ł. Text in Arabic, Chinese or Cyrillic is written with a font from your device, in the same white-with-black-outline style. For other fonts, colors or a background behind the text, the Add Text to Photo tool offers more settings.

Copyright: which images can you use for a meme?

The generator deliberately offers no library of famous memes: those images, often taken from movies, TV shows or press photos, belong to their creators. The safest choice is to use your own photos, screenshots of your own content or the blank backgrounds provided. In the United States, parody can fall under fair use, but that's decided case by case and covers neither every commercial use nor content that defames someone. Also think about people's right to their own image: before posting a meme of someone recognizable, ask for their permission.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the meme generator free?

Yes, completely: no sign-up, no watermark, no limit. The meme is created in your browser.

How do I put text at the top and bottom of an image?

Add your image: the "Top text" and "Bottom text" fields are already there. Type your lines; they appear in white with a black outline and adapt to the width.

How do I move or add text?

Drag a text across the image with your mouse or finger. The "Add text" button creates a new one that you can place wherever you want.

Can I make a meme without a photo?

Yes: pick one of the solid or gradient backgrounds below the upload box, then write your text on it.

How do I send the meme on WhatsApp or Discord?

Click "Copy image", then paste it into the chat. If copying isn't possible in your browser, download the image and share it from your files or your gallery.

Why are there no famous meme templates?

The images of famous memes belong to their creators. The tool lets you create from your own photos or blank backgrounds, with no risk.
