Which collage layout should you choose?

Start from the number of photos and the story you want to tell. Two photos side by side work well for before-and-after comparisons, or a portrait paired with a detail. With three or four photos, a mosaic that gives a large cell to the main image guides the eye: the best photo grabs attention and the others complete the story. Regular grids, 2×2 or 3×3, suit consistent series like dishes, products or the steps of a DIY project. For vacation memories, mix landscapes and portraits in a layout with several rows. If a photo is very long or tall, put it in a cell with the same orientation so it isn't cropped too much.

The right format for Instagram, stories or printing

The square 1:1 format is still the easiest to share anywhere. For an Instagram feed, the vertical 4:5 takes up more of the phone screen; for a story or status, 9:16 fills the whole screen. 16:9 suits computer screens, TVs and presentations. To print, choose A4 portrait or landscape and the "Print" size: the collage is then 3,508 pixels on its long side, which matches an A4 sheet at 300 dots per inch, the usual resolution for a good print. For on-screen use, the HD size of 2,160 pixels is more than enough and gives smaller files.

Spacing, borders and rounded corners: the finishing touches

A thin white line between photos gives an airy, album-like look; with no spacing, the images touch and form a single, more graphic block. The border adds a margin around the whole collage, handy for a print you want to frame or to keep the collage from running into the edge of a screen. Rounded corners soften the overall look, especially with fairly wide spacing. For the background color, white and black go with everything; a soft shade taken from one of the photos, such as the beige of a beach or the blue of a sky, visually ties the images together.
