Check a new or used keyboard, or after a liquid spill
Before buying a laptop or a used keyboard, take a minute to press every key: a dead key shows up right away. The test is also useful after a spilled drink, for a sticky key, or to check a new mechanical keyboard as soon as it arrives, while there's still time to return it.
Ghosting and anti-ghosting: how many keys at once?
On many entry-level keyboards, certain combinations of three or four keys aren't all recognized at once: this is known as ghosting, or key blocking. It's especially annoying in games, where you often hold down W, A, Shift, and Space at the same time. Gaming keyboards advertise anti-ghosting or “N-key rollover”: hold down several keys and the test shows you how many are detected simultaneously.
A key isn't working: what should you do?
Some keys, like Fn or media keys, are handled by the keyboard or the operating system and never reach the browser: that's not necessarily a fault. On an external keyboard, try a different USB port or replace the batteries. A sticky key can often be cleaned with compressed air or isopropyl alcohol, with the keyboard unplugged. If the characters don't match the keys (Q instead of A, for example), the layout selected in your system settings is the cause. Why doesn't the Fn key light up?
The Fn key is handled directly by the keyboard and sends no signal to the computer: no website can detect it. The same is sometimes true of media keys or shortcuts reserved by the system.
How do I know if my keyboard is anti-ghosting?
Hold down several keys at once, for example the ones you use in games: the test shows how many simultaneous key presses are recognized. If a key doesn't light up while others are held down, your keyboard has reached its limit.
Can I test a QWERTY or German keyboard?
