ZIP, RAR, 7z: what's the difference?
All three formats bundle several files into one and make them smaller. ZIP is the most universal: Windows, macOS, iPhone and Android open it without extra software. RAR, created by Eugene Roshal, often compresses a little better and can split an archive into several volumes, but you need an app to open it on most devices. 7z, the format of the free 7-Zip software, uses LZMA compression, which usually produces the smallest files. Finally, TAR, GZ, BZ2 and XZ come from the Linux world: TAR bundles the files, then GZ, BZ2 or XZ compresses them, hence double extensions like .tar.gz. This tool reads all of these formats and can convert any of them to ZIP.
Open a RAR or ZIP file on iPhone and Android
On iPhone, the Files app unzips a ZIP with a single tap, but RAR and 7z files are often a problem. On Android, it depends on the file manager you have installed. This page works in Safari and in Chrome: tap "Browse," pick the archive in Files, iCloud Drive or your downloads, then tap the eye to view a photo or PDF, or the arrow to save a file. To keep everything inside a RAR, the easiest option is "Download all as ZIP": you get a ZIP your phone can open on its own. Phones have less memory available, so for anything over a few hundred MB, use a computer instead.
Password-protected archives and limits
When a ZIP archive is protected, its file list stays visible but the content is encrypted: a "Password" field appears, and extraction only works with the right password. Encrypted RAR and 7z archives, however, aren't supported here: a message tells you so. Everything happens in your browser's memory, with no upload to a server. That's ideal for privacy, but the size is limited by your device's memory: above 2 GB, opening may fail, and a phone often hits its limit sooner. A multi-part archive (.part1.rar, .z01, .7z.001) has to be put back together with desktop software.
