How does colored text work on Discord?
Discord has no button for coloring text. Color comes from a code block whose language is “ansi”: the message starts with three backticks followed by the word ansi (```ansi), alone on the first line, and ends with three backticks. Inside, ANSI codes change the style: ESC[31m turns the text red, ESC[32m green, ESC[1m turns on bold, ESC[4m underline and ESC[0m resets to the normal style. Text colors use codes 30 to 37, background colors codes 40 to 47. That's where the difficulty lies: ESC is an invisible character (control character number 27) that you can't type on a keyboard. The generator inserts it for you.
My colors don't show up on Discord: why?
The first and most common reason: you're looking at the message in the mobile app. On phones, Discord shows the block without the colors, while they do appear on desktop and in the browser. Second reason: the word “ansi” doesn't come right after the three backticks, for example because of a space, or the text starts on the same line. Third reason: the block was retyped or edited by hand and the invisible ESC characters were lost; all that's left are bits like “[31m” in plain text in the message. Copy the block with the tool's button, without changing it. Finally, each color change adds a few characters that count toward the 2,000-character limit per message (4,000 with Nitro).
Discord's other formatting: bold, italics, strikethrough, spoilers
For a simple effect, you don't need color: Discord understands Markdown syntax in every message, on desktop and mobile alike. **text** shows in bold, *text* in italics, __text__ underlined, ~~text~~ struck through, and ||text|| becomes a hidden spoiler you have to click to read. A backtick on each side (`text`) gives inline code, three backticks a code block. Color, on the other hand, only exists in ansi blocks, shown in a code box with a monospace font: perfect for an announcement, server rules or a scoreboard, less so for everyday chat.
