Remove an Object or a Person From a Photo

Brush over whatever is in the way (a passerby, a power line, a trash can, a stain) and the artificial intelligence rebuilds the background in its place. The rest of the photo keeps its full resolution, and the image never leaves your device.

Ideal for passersby, objects, power lines, signs and stains. The AI makes up what was behind: on a very busy background, a second pass may help.

How do you remove an object from a photo?

  1. Add the photo

Drag it into the box or pick it from your gallery. On first use, the AI model (28 MB) is downloaded once while you mark the area to erase.

  2. Brush over the object

Fully cover what you want to remove, going a little past the edges, shadow and reflection included. Zoom in for details, clean up extra paint with the eraser, undo if needed.

  3. Erase and download

Tap "Erase": the object disappears. Compare before and after, go over any leftover trace, then download the photo as a JPG or a PNG.

A precise AI eraser that stays on your device

AI retouching in your browser

An open-source model rebuilds what was behind the object (grass, wall, sky, sand, water…) right on your computer or phone.

Full resolution

Only the area around the object is recalculated, then blended back in with a soft edge: the rest of the photo is neither downsized nor retouched.

Brush, eraser and undo

Set the brush size, erase part of the selection, undo or redo each step, and zoom with your fingers or mouse for small details.

Multiple passes

Remove objects one after another, or go over a leftover trace again. The "Before" button shows the original photo at any time.

Remove a person, a stranger or an object from a photo

A tourist in the middle of your vacation photo, a car parked in front of the house, a trash can, power lines across the sky, a sign, a stain on a wall or dust on an old scanned photo: the AI eraser makes them disappear in seconds. You brush over what's in the way, and the AI fills in a believable background, extending what surrounds it. Some recent phones and computers have their own tool, such as Magic Eraser in Google Photos, Clean Up in Apple's Photos app or Object Eraser on Samsung Galaxy phones, but whether you have it depends on your device model and software version. Here, everything works in any recent browser, on a PC, Mac, tablet or phone, for free and without signing up.

How to paint the area for a clean result

The secret to a good result is to cover the whole object, with a small margin around it, without forgetting its shadow or reflection. If a piece stays visible, even a few pixels at the edge, the AI uses it as a starting point and may draw a blurry shape where the object was. Zoom in (pinch with two fingers on a touchscreen, Ctrl and the scroll wheel or the + and − buttons on a computer) to paint the outline precisely, and use the eraser to remove any extra paint. For a large subject, a whole person for example, work in two or three successive areas rather than all at once. Simple or repetitive backgrounds (sky, sea, grass, sand, a plain wall, a road) give the most natural results; behind an object in front of a face, some text or a building with straight lines, the AI has to guess more, and a second pass can help.

Full-resolution retouching, without uploading the photo

The AI model works on a 512 × 512 pixel square taken around the painted area, with enough context to understand the background. The result is then scaled to the real size of that area and blended back into the photo with a soft edge a few pixels wide: the rest of the image is kept pixel for pixel, at its full resolution. On a very large area, the rebuilt part may look a little softer than the rest: erasing in several smaller areas then gives a sharper result. The model, open source and free to use, is downloaded once (about 28 MB) and then cached by your browser; the processing happens on your device, using the graphics card (WebGPU) when available. Very large photos are downsized to fit in the browser's memory: above 16 megapixels on iPhone and iPad, and above 40 megapixels elsewhere.

Cleaner photos for memories, listings and social media

The AI eraser comes in handy in plenty of everyday situations. For a Facebook Marketplace, eBay or rental listing, it removes the clutter lying around the item or in the room. For a photo of a landmark, it erases the passersby who wandered into the shot. For a landscape, it removes a pole, a crane or power lines. For a portrait, it takes out a small blemish, something sticking out behind the head or a person in the background. On an old scanned photo, it gets rid of spots and dust. Once the photo is clean, you can crop it, compress it to send by email, or remove its background entirely with our other image tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I remove a person from a photo for free?

Add the photo, brush over the person going slightly past the edges, shadow included, then tap "Erase". For a whole person, work in two or three areas. It's free, with no sign-up, and nothing is added to your photo.

Does the AI eraser work on PC, iPhone and Android?

Yes, in a recent browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari). On a phone, paint with your finger and zoom with two fingers; on a computer, use the mouse, Ctrl and the scroll wheel to zoom, and Ctrl+Z to undo.

Why does the first erase take longer?

On first use, your browser downloads the AI model (about 28 MB), then caches it. After that, each erase usually takes one to a few seconds, depending on how powerful your device is.

There's a leftover trace or a blurry shape. What should I do?

Usually a piece of the object or its shadow wasn't covered. Paint generously over the trace and erase again, or undo the pass and paint a slightly bigger area. On a very busy background, erasing in several small areas also helps.

Does the photo lose quality?

No: only the erased area is recalculated, and the rest of the photo stays identical. You download a high-quality JPG or a lossless PNG. Only photos above 16 megapixels on iPhone and iPad (40 megapixels elsewhere) are downsized.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. The AI runs in your browser: your photos stay on your device and are neither uploaded nor stored. Only the AI model is downloaded, once.
