How do you crop a picture into a circle?
-
Add the photo
Pick a photo from your gallery or your computer: JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC.
-
Frame it in the circle
Drag the photo and zoom with two fingers, the scroll wheel or the slider. Choose a circle or a rounded square, and add a border if you want.
-
Download the PNG
Choose 512 or 1024 pixels and download: around the shape, the image is transparent, so the round photo sits on any background.
A sharp, well-framed round profile picture
Precise framing
Move and zoom the photo up to 6 times, with your finger, the mouse or the arrow keys, to center the face perfectly.
Transparent background
The corners around the circle are transparent: the photo fits neatly into a document, a presentation or a web page, whatever the background color.
Custom border
Add a white outline or one in any color you like, and set its thickness.
Circle or rounded square
For a more modern look, choose a square with rounded corners and adjust the corner radius.
A round profile picture for a website, an email signature or a résumé
A round photo gives a polished, modern look to a website's About page, an email signature, a team page, a presentation, a name badge or a résumé. Most social networks and messaging apps (WhatsApp, Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook) already crop your profile picture into a circle automatically: for them, a well-framed square photo is enough. A round photo with a transparent background is useful anywhere you insert the image yourself, in a document, a slideshow, a website or an email: it stays round, with no white corners or square background, whatever the software.
Make a picture round in Word, PowerPoint or Canva
In Word and PowerPoint, you usually have to select the image, open the Picture Format tab, choose Crop, then Crop to Shape and Oval, and finally set the aspect ratio to 1:1 to get a true circle. In Canva, you use a circle frame. These crops only work inside the program where they were made: copied elsewhere, the image often turns square again. With this tool, you crop the image into a circle once and for all: the PNG file you get is already round and transparent, and drops straight into Word, PowerPoint, Google Docs, Canva or a website, with no extra settings.
Frame it well and choose the right size
For a great profile picture, start with a sharp, well-lit photo with the face looking at the camera. Zoom in until the face fills about two-thirds of the circle, leave a little space above the head, and place the eyes slightly above the center. The part of the photo that will be cut off stays faintly visible while you frame, which helps you judge. 512 × 512 pixels is enough for an email signature, a website or a résumé; 1024 × 1024 is better for printing or high-resolution screens. The file is always a PNG, because JPG can't keep transparency: the corners around the circle would turn white or black. Zooming in a lot on a small photo makes it blurry: in that case, choose 512 pixels.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I crop a picture into a circle for free?
Add the photo on this page, drag and zoom to place the face in the circle, then click "Download PNG". It's free, with no sign-up and no watermark.
Why is there a checkerboard around the circle?
The checkerboard represents transparency: it isn't in the file. Around the shape, the downloaded image is transparent and takes on the color of whatever background you place it on.
Can I add an outline around the round photo?
Yes: check "Add a border", choose its color and set its thickness. The border follows the shape you chose, circle or rounded square.
What size should a profile picture be?
512 × 512 pixels works for most uses (website, email signature, résumé). Choose 1024 × 1024 for printing or large displays. Social networks resize the photo themselves.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes: move the photo with one finger and pinch with two fingers to zoom. The PNG is saved to your downloads; on iPhone, open it from the Files app to save it to Photos.
Is my photo uploaded to the internet?
No. The cropping happens in your browser, on your device: the photo is neither uploaded nor stored.
