How do you convert an AVIF to JPG?

  1. Add your AVIF images

Drag one or more .avif files into the box above, or paste them with Ctrl+V. The conversion starts right away.

  2. Adjust quality and background

JPG is preselected, with 92% quality. Adjust the slider and, if the image is transparent, the color that will replace the transparency (white by default).

  3. Download your JPGs

Save each image separately or all of them together in a ZIP file: each JPG has the same width and height as the original AVIF.

AVIF images that finally open everywhere

Maximum compatibility

JPG opens in every photo app, office suite, printer and online form, even those that don't know AVIF.

Batch conversion

Convert a whole series of AVIF images grabbed from the web in one go, then download them together.

Transparency handled

JPG has no transparency: the transparent areas of an AVIF take the background you choose, white by default.

Nothing is uploaded

The conversion runs in your browser: your images are never uploaded, and their hidden data (GPS location, camera model) isn't copied over.

Why do my images save as AVIF?

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a recent image format based on the AV1 video codec: at similar visual quality, it often produces much smaller files than JPG, sometimes half the size. To make their pages load faster, many websites send it to browsers that understand it. The result: when you use “Save image as” in Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari, you get an .avif file instead of a .jpg. The image isn't damaged, but not every program can read it yet.

Why won't an AVIF file open?

Recent browsers show AVIF without any trouble, but other programs still can't: older versions of Windows, Photoshop or Office, printing tools, photo editors, online marketplaces, government forms or messaging apps that only accept .jpg, .jpeg and .png. On Windows, a free extension from the Microsoft Store is sometimes needed to see thumbnails. JPG, on the other hand, is read by practically every device and program: it's the right format for sharing or uploading an image. This tool relies on your browser's decoder: if the AVIF doesn't show up, update Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.

What changes when you go from AVIF to JPG

JPG is an older, less efficient format: at the same quality, the resulting file is usually bigger than the original AVIF, sometimes twice as big. Also, JPG doesn't support transparency: the transparent areas of an AVIF take the background color you choose, white by default. A high dynamic range (HDR) or 10-bit image is brought down to 8 bits, and an animated AVIF gives a single still image. Finally, GPS location and other hidden data aren't copied over. The quality slider sets the balance between sharpness and file size; to make the JPG smaller afterwards, use “Compress Image”.

Other output formats and related tools

The output format is preselected as JPG, but you can choose PNG, lossless and with transparency, or WebP if your browser supports it. The converter also reads WebP, PNG, JPG, GIF, BMP and .jfif files. For other common formats, check out “WebP to JPG”, “HEIC to JPG” (iPhone photos) and “JFIF to JPG”; to shrink the dimensions, “Resize Image”; to make a document, “JPG to PDF”.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an AVIF file?

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec that compresses better than JPG: at similar quality, files are often much smaller. It also supports transparency, high dynamic range and animation.

How do I open an AVIF file on a PC, Mac or phone?

The easiest way is to open it in a recent browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari), or to convert it to JPG with this tool. Recent versions of macOS, iOS and Android can also display it; on Windows, a free extension from the Microsoft Store may be needed.

How do I convert an AVIF to JPG?

Drag your .avif files into the box above: they're converted to JPG right away, at 92% quality, which you can adjust. Download each image, or all of them together in a ZIP.

Why is the JPG bigger than the AVIF?

Because AVIF compresses much better: the same visual result takes more data in JPG. Lower the quality slider for a smaller file, or run it through “Compress Image” afterwards.

What happens to the transparency of an AVIF image?

JPG doesn't support transparency: it's replaced by a white background by default, or by the color you choose. To keep it, choose PNG under “Convert to”.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion happens entirely in your browser; your images never leave your device. It's free, with no sign-up.
