Make a video fit TikTok, Reels or Shorts (9:16)
TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts play videos full screen and upright, in the 9:16 format. A horizontal 16:9 video looks tiny there, with black or blurry bars above and below. Cropping it to 9:16 means cutting a vertical slice out of the picture: choose "9:16", then drag the frame over your subject (a person, a face, the action) so it stays in the middle of the vertical video. Keep in mind that part of the picture goes away: on a 1920 × 1080 landscape video, the slice you keep is 608 × 1080 pixels. The apps accept that without any problem, but if you already know a clip will end up on TikTok, film it vertically to keep the full resolution.
Which aspect ratio for which platform?
9:16 (vertical) is for TikTok, Instagram and Facebook Reels and Stories, YouTube Shorts and Snapchat. 4:5 is the portrait format of the Instagram and Facebook feed: it takes up more of the screen than a square without being cut off in the preview. 1:1 (square) works everywhere, from the Instagram feed to LinkedIn, and looks good on both computers and phones. 16:9 (horizontal) is still the format of YouTube, TVs and presentations; it also lets you turn part of a vertical video back into a landscape one. Finally, the free format lets you remove black bars burned into the picture, or zoom in on a detail, with any proportions you like.
Crop a video for free, without an app or a watermark
You don't need to install CapCut, Premiere Pro or an editing app just to crop a video: this tool works in your browser on iPhone, Android, Windows PC or Mac. It adds no watermark and asks for no account or subscription. Your video isn't uploaded anywhere: it is processed on your device by FFmpeg, a video engine downloaded once (about 30 MB). Since the whole picture is re-encoded, expect roughly the length of the video on a recent computer, a bit longer on a phone or for a 4K video. To save time, first keep only the part you need with "Cut / Trim Video".
Crop, trim or resize: what's the difference?
Cropping cuts off the edges of the picture to change its framing and proportions: that's what this tool does. Trimming shortens a video by removing time from the start or the end; for that, use "Cut / Trim Video". Resizing changes the size of the whole picture in pixels without cutting anything. Rotating turns the picture a quarter turn, for example a video filmed sideways: use "Rotate Video" for that, then crop if needed. And if the resulting file is too large to send by WhatsApp or email, shrink it afterwards with "Compress Video".
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I make a horizontal video fit TikTok?
Add the video, choose 9:16, drag the frame over the subject you want to keep, then export. You get a vertical MP4 that's ready to post on TikTok, as a Reel or as a Short.
How do I crop a video on iPhone or Android without an app?
Open this page in Safari or Chrome, pick the video from your gallery, then move the frame with your finger and pull a corner to resize it. The cropped MP4 is then saved to your downloads or your Files app.
Does cropping add a watermark?
No. No logo or text is added to your video, and the tool is free with no sign-up.
Will my video lose quality?
The part you keep retains its original pixels: the output resolution is simply the size of the frame, shown before export. The picture is re-encoded to high-quality H.264, with a loss you won't see in most cases.
Is the sound kept?
Yes, the whole soundtrack is kept and saved as AAC in the MP4 file. To remove it, use "Remove Audio From Video" afterwards.
Is my video uploaded to a server?
No. Cropping happens in your browser with FFmpeg; only the video engine is downloaded, once. Your video stays on your device.
